Neighborhood Improvements

This project was constructed on behalf of Broward County Board of Commissioners under their ongoing Neighborhood Improvement Program. This program was established in 1995 to upgrade infrastructure and eliminate blight in unincorporated county neighborhoods. Man-Con Inc. has constructed over $72 million of this work since the year 2000.

Features of this project included: sanitary sewer replacement with connection of existing residences to the new system; drainage pipe and structures; slip-lining of existing drainage pipe; new water mains; grout; abandonment of existing water main; connection of houses to the new water main; force mains; a lift station; abandonment and demolition of existing lift station; directional drilled pipe under Sunrise Blvd. near the Swap Shop; demolition of concrete and pavement; installation of new concrete sidewalks, type “F” curbs, and driveways; construction of new roadway subgrade, base and asphalt pavement; signage and pavement markings; tree relocation; new trees and landscape features; swale sodding and irrigation.

Subaqueous HDD Installations

This was a design-build project that Man-Con Inc. was awarded after going through a comprehensive evaluation process. The project involved replacement of the existing water and force mains at two locations across the Intracoastal Waterway. A total of four (4) 18-inch diameter HDPE force mains and two (2) 18-inch diameter water mains were constructed by directional drill under the Intracoastal Waterway at two (2) locations. The replacement also required connection to existing facilities at both ends of the directional drill locations including two (2) open-cut connection crossings within the FDOT right-of-way on State Road A1A. It also required the coordination of all force and water main shut downs, restoration, permitting, environmental monitoring, and abandonment and preservation of existing facilities crossing the Intracoastal Waterway for the City’s use either as redundancy or leasing to outside utility authorities.

Man-Con Inc. hired the engineering firm of Craven Thompson & Associates, Inc. (CTA) of Fort Lauderdale to design the project and acquire all of the necessary permits. We also retained the services of the Utility Services Authority (USA) of Port St. Lucie to install six (6) subaqueous crossings of the Intracoastal Waterway. Each directional drill crossing consisted of approximately 1000 lineal feet of 18-inch HDPE pipe.

Flagler Drive Reconfiguration

This high profile project located within West Palm Beach’s waterfront area involved the realignment of Flagler Drive from North Clematis Street to Okeechobee Blvd. This project was constructed simultaneously with the city’s Waterfront Commons Project. Improvements included: removal of existing utilities, surface improvements, installation of new water, sewer and drainage systems, and reconstruction of roadway, curb, gutter, sidewalks, and driveways. Improvements also included new street and pedestrian lighting, traffic control devices, signage, hardscape, irrigation and landscape improvements.

In addition to the careful planning, coordination, and execution of work within the FDOT right-of-way, the project required considerable coordination and sensitivity to downtown businesses and residents along this busy corridor, to accommodate access for employees, customers, residents and visitors. Man-Con Inc. placed special signs, temporary ramps, temporary lighting, and altered its normal work schedule during construction. This was all done in an effort to minimize the impact of construction activities on the public.

North Beach Improvements

This project consisted of construction of new sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems in the sensitive island neighborhoods of Terra Mar and Bel-Air within the town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Both systems were constructed at elevations below sea level and involved 100% dewatering of native soils. New pump stations and force main systems were an integral part of project, along with connections to outside force mains. Since many streets are dead end streets, a great deal of coordination was required with the residents of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea for traffic flow, mail delivery, trash pick-up, and emergency access.

Water Works 2011

The City of Fort Lauderdale’s 2011 Water Works program was developed to replace or bring new sanitary sewers, lift stations, and force main connections to residences and businesses across the entire City. Man-Con Inc. was one of only five contractors qualified to participate in this program. Contractors were awarded new work orders based on the performance of previous work orders. As a result, Man-Con Inc. was issued a total of eleven (11) separate work orders under this program totaling in value to well over $42 million. The work was located within the historic River Oaks, Poinciana Park and Edgewood communities. One of the reasons Man-Con, Inc. was the contractor of choice for the work in these historical areas was due to the carefulness and caution that was taken by Man-con Inc. in performing construction operations in the vicinity of mature trees and owner installed right-of-way improvements.

Dixie Well Field Improvements

This project consisted of well field improvements at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club located in the city of Plantation. This project was bid in parallel with the permitting process in order for the City to gain a time advantage in the construction of the project. The scope of the project evolved and additional work was added to the contract as the project plans were being prepared. Man-Con Inc.’s review and analysis of the project plans was integral to the design and completion of 100% of the construction and permit documents.

Man-Con Inc.'s contract on this project consisted of the construction, testing, and placing into service the following: 11,000 lineal feet of 20″- 30″ diameter ductile iron pipe, pressure sustaining valves, pressure relief valves, combination and air release valves, well construction and drilling, submersible turbine well pumps, fuel storage tanks with fuel monitoring systems, electrical control panels and instrumentation, switchboards, solid state reduced voltage starters, and back-up generators. In addition, Man-Con Inc. was responsible for the construction of the building required to house the backup power systems. This included clearing and site grading, excavation and pouring of pads and foundations, masonry construction and stucco, trusses and roofing, mechanical, electrical, and HVAC installations, paint and finishes, final grading and landscaping, and training of City personnel in the operation of the equipment and systems.
